Somerfield in Bradley Stoke is closing on November 7 and we want to know what you want to replace it.
Soon there will be a prime retail unit available but will it go to someone who will benefit the town?
Here at the Examiner we’re curious sorts … And to that end, we’d like to know what you think should open in Fern Dene.
Click into the main story and you can add to the debate - Fred has started it by saying he wants Waitrose. What’s your view?
Do you want another supermarket to help break up the Tesco BS32 monopoly?
Or would you rather have something completely different? Either way, let us know. Fill in the form at the bottom of the page.
We’d also be interested to hear from anyone who might know some what will open on the former Somerfield site.
We can promise that we will treat any information in the utmost confidence. Email news@sadlybroke.com
Fill in the form below and let us know what you want in Fern Dene.

Waitrose would be great.
They are sufficiently different to other supermarkets to compete with Tesco

I echo Fred’s calls for Waitrose. I’m not sure that someone like Sainsbury’s would offer enough to drag people away from Tescos. Waitrose is also in keeping with the area and I’m sure would attract plenty of trade from us upper crusts!!!!

How about the site is levelled and a decent-sized proper childrens’ playground is erected? We need another supermarket, hotel or offices like another hole in the head.

Not sure Woods Estate Agent, The Frying Machine, Lloyd Pharmacy or Pizza Hut would be too pleased about the idea …

We only found out this evening on the Great Saturday Evening Newspaper Hunt…not surprised it is closing, it has never been very busy when we have been in. We’d like to see a little Waitrose there too. Waitrose Henleaze is pretty much the same size, so why not?
But PLEASE, not a LIDL or a Netto.
Children’s playground - not really a good idea. The site is quite secluded from the main road and will become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

“We’re scared of the kids, so build another supermarket. We only have ASDA, 3 Tesco, Morrisons, Farm Foods and Sainsbury”.

I think a Co-op would be nice cos it’s eco-friendlier than most other supermarkets and not as exclusive (expensive) as Waitrose. A children’s play area is a nice idea, but there is an area already just across the road for them, with a basket ball court, playing fields and tennis courts… I think its good for older people to have a reliable service nearby.

I think we should have something useful there like a video store. We have enough supermarkets!

How about a tram terminus, a town centre or another white elephant?
I have to admit that while we do have a rather large number of Tesco’s, it’s not as if having an alternative is going to bring their prices down. You can put whatever you like on that lot so long as it fits well between a pizza hut and a fish and chips shop. Perhaps a Holland and Barrett.

Waitrose would be great - come on Waitrose!
Otherwise I wouldn’t mind a co-op, sainsbury local, or even a smile.
Please not Lidl or anything though!
As for the person wanting a childrens play area, the one at the top of BS, (near Bosland School) is nearly always deserted, and certainly moreso than somerfield ever was.

Frankly I’m a bit of a fan of Lidl. I know their customer base is perceived as mainly people from a lower economic group, but I’ve always found their product lines to be value for money. I really don’t want the site falling into disrepair, and I would hope another retailer will move in soon.

How about a big hall? While we have several community centres, Bradley Stoke has no big space for concerts, plays etc.

No, no, an office-block complete with hotel please. We don’t have enough of those either.

Tescos want to expand and develop their existing store, which has just been refurbished. Why don’t they expand by using the space in the old Somerfield store, saving more unnecessary building, although it would unfortunately mean more Tescos, but no doubt they’ll get the go-ahead to expand anyway.
i.e. the Tescos non-food lines could move into this store.

How about an ice rink or another leisure facilty, Perhaps a restaurant, like Bottelino’s maybe, to cater for families… We have enough hotels, offices, supermarkets etc…

How about a motorcycle shop - good enough to compete with Fowlers. There’s nothing for us bike fans this side of town.
