Local elections: Where are the campaigners?

Written by Chris (editor) on Monday April 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pm

With just over a week to go before the local elections things seem to have gone strangely quiet in Bradley Stoke.

South Gloucestershire was named the country’s most boring election area by the BBC’s Politics Show - and the Examiner is beginning to wonder if they’re correct.

Here at HQ we have not had a single caller from any of the political parties in the past two months and no leaflets for more than two weeks.

Despite a slight rumpus over the community school, there does not seem to have been any other campaigns of note.

Now, we ask have you seen any representatives from any of the political parties on the streets of Bradley Stoke?

Fill in the form below if you spot any of them!

I think we’ve had one candidate for the Town elections around a couple of weeks ago.

Which was a shock, the last time I heard/saw a councillor or candidate was about 4 years ago (funnily enough!).

The funny and perhaps interesting thing is that we’ve never seen any of the County Councillors around here - which is disappointing considering the effect they have on BS! Seems to me they don’t want to face their electorate!

Have not seen any around my part of BS either. It is amazing considering the impending election that not one has set foot on my front door. Plenty of leaflets, though, most of which I’m sure will put people off voting (because of the bitchy content of the notes) rather than encourage them.

As someone standing for the Town Council for the first time, I can say that whilst not visiting all roads, I and the rest of my Conservative Candidates have spent a lot of time in the last 4 weeks knocking on people’s doors. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, this is normally in the evenings between 6 and 8. Quite often people are either not in or do not chose to answer the door. Either way, they do receive a leaflet to say we have called. Similarly if it is planned to do a set road during one day and you spend a long time talking to people, you may not necessarily get to call on everybody.

Mark, nice to see you on the website. You’ll have to be quick at the O’Grady household. Got our postal voting slips today. Still haven’t seen a single councillor or had a note to say any have called.

I have just had my postal vote and as always voted conservative. My boyfriend is a communist and has just opened his postal vote. He has no idea who to vote for and I cannot tell him what each local representative stands for because I have no idea. We got the garbled yellow flyer from the conservatives but neither of us could make head not tail of it. My brother rang me and said “it doesnt matter who you vote for as long as it is a conservative” I replied “The lady is not for turning” and ticked the conservative box. My boyfriend was not impressed with either of us and is refusing to vote. Could each party candidate please post four bullet points with their main local policy to assist me. Thanks.

Jennie, perhaps you might want to check out some previous content from this website.

The yellow note you refer to was covered in depth here. It was about Bradley Stoke Community School.

You can find out a little more about the Labour/Lib Dem stance on the row from this article here.

Because there are so many candidates and several wards in Bradley Stoke it will probably be impractical to expect them all to post.

    Jennie,
Of the 15 seats on the Town Council Elections, 7 have only one candidate put forward, so they will be automatically elected. Of the other 8, there are Conservatives standing for all of them and only 6 other candidates, so if you do the maths, you will see that the Town Council should become Conservative for the first time. The main question is who will run South Glos Council. If the Conservatives run both, one would hope that this would result in co-operation between all. As for canvassing, I was in Ferndene last night, and will be doing Saxon Way tonight.
If you let me know which road you live in, I will try and ensure that some one calls.

Excellent news. The conservatives have been round and given me exactly what I requested. A clear short summary of their local policies. I gave it to my boyfriend and amazingly he has voted conservative! He is a communist! As a police officer he wasnt very impressed with your idea for more community support officers but he was impressed that you had brought the leaflet round showing exactly what we needed to know. Well done. Its not the policy that matters, what’s important, is that it’s a Conservative Government.
