Changes to busy junction mean roadworks hell

Written by Chris (editor) on Wednesday January 30th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Motorists using Winterbourne Road are set for three months of roadworks misery as a new layout for road signals is installed.

The works get under way on Monday, 4 February 2008 and are expected to last until May.

The Examiner revealed last summer that changes were to be made to allow better access to the Vantage Business Park.

The new lights will stop traffic in all directions to allow vehicles out of the park and on to Winterbourne Road.

Oooo! I’m looking forward to driving through that every day. Why can’t the council do something about the other end of the Old Gloucester Road? That’s where we need traffic lights! This business park must have some very important/rich companies moving in with buddies on the council!!?

    Hi Graham,

Agreed about the other end of Old Gloucester Road. They need to put something in there to help the flow of traffic. Mind you, even if they did, the traffic lights onto the ring road need sorting out at the same time. I rang South Gloucs Council a while back to complain because from our direction you get a paltry eight seconds to get out of the junction when the other directions have well over a minute. They rang back and said the timings were correct … amazing but true!

Don’t get me started about those offices that are now directly behind my house!! Why did they need those when there’s empty offices in Aztec West??

No reason at all, just greed!! :(

So how is everyone getting on with the roadworks so far? I biked past it on Monday but it doesn’t seem to be causing any delays yet …

I hate to admit it Chris but the traffic seems to run better!! The coned lanes make the traffic on the main road slow down giving more opportunities to cross over. Also, looking at the plans for the new junction it might eventually help traffic flow. Hate to be so positive at stupid-o’clock on a Monday morning!

As I use this junction into and out of the Old Gloucs Road on route from Bradley Stoke at least 6 times every day I am chuffed to bits that traffic lights are being installed - its not just the new Vantage Business Park that needs this but all users of this road. Many drivers use this route to access Bradley Stoke North business areas via Trench Lane. During rush hours in particular the island in the middle of the Winterbourne Road is a death trap as so many people like to go to the wrong side of the road in order to turn right towards BS when leaving the OGR At lease this new set up will be fair to all. Bring it on!

Hi Sally, if you check here you’ll see that the island to go from Winterbourne Road to Old Gloucs Road will still remain; the changes are solely for the junction to the Vantage Business Park unfortunately. I do agree, though, they do need to make some kind of change further down the road.
