Bradley Stoke and the rest of South Gloucestershire will get weekly waste food collection after the district council approved new rubbish and recycling policy.
According to the council, they are currently ranked fifth best for recycling for unitary authorities in the country at 39.5%.
With the new food collections the council expects this to rise another 9.5% with a target of 50% of waste recycled by 2010/11.
Elsewhere in the policy, the Stoke Gifford Sort It centre is to be upgraded and an extra £50,000 will be invested for more plastic bottle recycling sites.
A £15 charge is also to be introduced for the collection of bulky items which is currently a free service.

Whilst I think it’s fair to charge for the collection of bulky items, I think £15 is a bit high and could end up in resulting in more fly-tipping as people will rather dump stuff than pay the money!
Do you know when these new initiatives are due in? Might be worth booking a bulky collection before they do!

Matt, the press release doesn’t say but it has only be ‘adopted’ by council in the past few days. I can ask about and see if I can find out … I wouldn’t mind knowing when the food collection is coming in as well.

Marvellous, not. We already have three different bins which are collected with varying degrees of irregularity, to add a fourth just fills me with dread, especially as it has gone so well in other local authority areas….hears hoping it goes better in Bradley Stoke and we do not end up with a rat problem….

I think we already have a rat problem. I’ve seen plenty all around Bradley Stoke(and it’s been that way for several years) and saw one yesterday at the lake (they get fed with bread down there), the bins should be alright just as long as people keep them closed.

In the area where i leave i suspect some of the people who live in flats don’t have any bins leading them to put waste in other people bins or
just dump it in the bin area

I don’t know how the council can continue to claim they are trying to increase recyling in the area. This week we had our entire recycling box rejected by the collectors, leaving a sticker saying that we have to dry the cans / bottles inside. I’m not sure about anyone else but our box leakes and collects water.
My husband and I are furious and after buying additional storeage to allow us to contientiously sort the recycing, rinsing out everything that goes into the box and regularly taking plastic bottles (which the council won’t collect !) to recycle ourselves we just feel like emptying the recycling box into our regular bin and saving ourselves the trouble !
Does anyone else have the same problem ?

We put our green box outside without a lid, in the past the lid either blows away or gets stolen. At the bottom of the green bin there are holes. You have to push out the plastic stoppers, the rain water then drains away. Hope this helps…

Recycling is a joke! Cummon, we’re sorting the waste for them, thats not Recycling its sorting.
Recycling by defination is to use something again for something else.
Personally I can’t wait for the food collections, that’ll be the last cubic foot of our garden taken up with another bin!
Best thing ive done to help recycle is to put a bolt on the inside of the letter box. no letterbox no junkmail!!!. ok, i have to leave it unbolted in the morning for the Royal Mail, but soon as thats delivered the letterbox is bolted. My Green bag used to get emptied every other week, now with the bolt, im 6 weeks in and its only 1/4 full, and thats my own paperwork!!!!
Don’t recycle, stop the delivery of Junk Mail!!!!!!!!
