An MP has criticised plans which have been submitted for a new office block on the site of the “thriving” Butterfly Day Nursery in Bradley Stoke.
Doug Naysmith, who holds the Bristol North West seat, said in a letter to South Gloucestershire planners that approving any development would cause “distress” to parents and children.
We reported in September that the nursery, based on Great Park Road in the north of the town, could be replaced by a three-storey office block.
The final decision on the plan has now been referred to council committee, and Dr Naysmith appealed to them to turn it down, saying parents would have trouble finding alternative spaces in the town.
“If the nursery were to close this would cause great distress to parents and children, and I find it difficult to imagine that there are sufficient alternative nursery places available in the locality.
“I would be interested to know the views of the Director of Services for Children and Young People about the potential impact of the closure of this nursery.”
Dr Naysmith went on to say he has “doubts” over the need for more office space considering the current economic climate.
Members of the public – many of whom use the nursery – have replied in force to the now-closed consultation with more than 30 objections listed on the South Gloucestershire Council website.
Many of the replies praise the “excellent” service provided by the nursery which is in a “prime location”.
