Faster broadband campaign hots up as motion set to go to council

The Bradley Stoke Examiner’s campaign for faster broadband in the town is to go to the district council.

A motion is set to be presented at the next full meeting of South Gloucestershire Council by Bradley Stoke councillors.

They will call for telecoms giant BT to roll out its new super-fast fibre optic network in Bradley Stoke first.

The move comes as The Bradley Stoke Examiner’s petition is signed by more than 30 residents – including the mayor.

The motion, being backed by the Conservatives, could mean a big step in lobbying BT for faster access to the internet.

Conservative councillor for Bradley Stoke South, and town mayor, Rob Jones, said the slow speed of broadband here was needed for business.

“As a Bradley Stoke resident, the poor speed of my broadband connection frustrates me regularly and I am sure that many fellow residents and businesses can sympathise with this.”

Cllr Jones added that “South Gloucestershire households and businesses need access to faster broadband speeds.”

The motion also notes The Bradley Stoke Examiner’s recent poll which showed that more than 60% of households in the town were getting speeds below the national average.

The move will also call on other providers to lay out their plans for faster broadband in Bradley Stoke and the wider district.

The Examiner discovered that cable firm Virgin Media is conducting a feasibility study into completing its current patchy service area in Bradley Stoke.
