Virgin Media say they could cable Bradley Stoke – but need your help to find out if there is demand for the service.
The firm partially cabled the town with its high-speed fibre-optic network as it was being built over the last 20 years.
But parts of the town were not cabled and have now been left with very slow ADSL services from either the Almondsbury and Filton exchanges.
Virgin Media’s network, though, can supply broadband with download speeds ranging from 10Mb to 50Mb.
Now, we have the chance to bring Bradley Stoke’s broadband into the 21st Century if we can convince Virgin Media enough of us would take up their service.
Our broadband campaign has already seen a motion from the town’s Conservative councillors passed by South Gloucestershire Council calling for faster internet.
Town mayor Robert Jones is backing our final push for faster broadband.
“This is fantastic news,” councillor Jones said. “It is important that high speed broadband is available to everyone that wants it and I’m pleased that Virgin Media is addressing the issue here in Bradley Stoke”
“I’d like to congratulate the Bradley Stoke Examiner for the success of their campaign and I’m proud to have been associated with it from the start.
“I encourage every resident to sign up now and send a clear message that the demand is sufficient for this to go ahead.”
Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said: “The Examiner’s done a great job championing the cause for faster broadband in Bradley Stoke.
“We’re now keen to establish exactly how much interest there is in the area so we can determine the viability of extending our network.
“More and more communities want access to faster broadband speeds so their families can enjoy the many benefits the internet has to offer.”
All you need to do to help us ensure Virgin Media completes its broadband roll-out in Bradley Stoke is e-mail cablemystreet@virginmedia.co.uk
Note: When you e-mail Virgin Media can you please remember to include your full postal address.
The more people that e-mail Virgin Media now will mean the more likely the company is to finish cabling Bradley Stoke.
As well as supplying ultra-fast broadband, Virgin Media also provides TV through its network with the UK’s most advanced TV on demand service and is the only TV platform to carry BBC iPlayer.
It is the second largest provider of pay TV, was the first to launch a high definition TV service and offers a high-specification, HD-ready V+ personal video recorder.

Id like Virgin Media cable in our town, but we have none to begin with. Just one LLU provider, and amaximum speed of 24mbps on ADSL2+. Virgin should consider its options, there are many high density places out there.

I just moved out of Rosemary Close due to it not having fast enough connection. I’ll put a vote in for it anyway. (Now in a cabled street with 50mb download….)

There’s an interesting story at the BBC about “broadband notspots” which says there are three million homes in Britain with Broadband speeds of under 2Mbps (the government target is for there to be no such homes by 2012).
There is an associated link for people with slow broadband to post comments.

I live on dewfalls drive and currently have a 5MB ADSL connection (4932 KB/s to be exact,) which costs me around £30 per month. Would Virgin be cheaper than this do you think?
29 gyre // Jun 14, 2009 at 10:56 pm
I’d kill for a 5MBit/s conn
30 Stu // Jun 17, 2009 at 1:18 am
I used to live in Dewfalls Drive and moved to Hawkins Crescent. From reading above, I can’t believe you can get 5Mbps in Dewfalls when I can only get 1Mbps in Hawkins… It’s not that far away. Anyway, email sent, here’s hoping

That is odd! I’m on a BT Connect Business account with a Cisco router mind, but I don’t think that should make any difference really.
If it makes you feel any better mine has dropped since my last message. lol
Speed (kbps): 4032

I need a better internet connection!!!
Please cable this street virgin.

I spoke to Virgin Media outside Carphone Warehouse at the weekend and was told they had no money to cable any more of Bradley Stoke and it just wasn’t going to happen. £30,000 to cable a stretch the length of Tesco.
Doesn’t look like we are going to get a better internet connection any time soon!

Hi Di,
To be honest – a salesperson in the Willow Brook Centre isn’t going to know more than the people we’ve been dealing with much higher in the organisation.
It still might happen so don’t lose faith!

I get 4MB from dewfalls drive with BT, sometimes it rises upto 5MB. I’d still move to Virgin if it was available, but only if it was considerably cheaper to make up for the hassle.
38 Luke // Aug 12, 2009 at 8:09 pm
In the last few months my speed via virgin (copper cables!) has more than doubled, i used to get about 1.5MB whereas i am now getting just under 4MB, it never quiet reaches 4MB (Wheatfield Drive). But still theres a problem if im downloading big files or gaming online during the day in the evening it can be down to 0.5MB sometimes.
The near 4MB is good but still not good enough, plus on fibre optic it would never slow so i would be much better whatever.
39 Mike // Aug 12, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Hi Luke, im on Virgin 10mb connection. If I use BBC iplayer to download a lot of programs Virgin then will traffic manage and drop the speed you will get during peek times. It explains it on there website – http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html
