A broadband ‘not-spot’ map has shown the extent of the slow internet speeds suffered by Bradley Stoke stoke residents.
The community project, set up by thinkbroadband.com, shows clearly the south-eastern corner of the town marked as a slow speed area.
A swathe of roads clustered around Webbs Wood Road and Bailey’s Court cannot connect at a speed faster than 2Mb.
A second area, around Ormonds Close and Ellicks Close are also blighted by problems.
The national map bears out the recent straw poll conducted by The Bradley Stoke Examiner which showed the average resident was connecting at less than the national average speed.
Bradley Stoke’s problems are caused by our two exchanges, Almondsbury and Filton, being too distant from homes.
The long copper lines mean poor signal and slow speeds – something we have been campaigning to resolve.
Some of the comments left of the website include: “Rubbish. Very unfair – and BT don’t want to know.”
Another said: “‘Europe’s biggist housing estate’… using exchanges as far as 6km away. What an excellent idea. I choose not to use Virgin.”
And one user tells a sorry tale of slow broadband: “Newer houses on other side of road have to put up with 8km connection to nearest exchange.”
Virgin Media say they will cable the remaining few thousand homes in the town that are not hooked up to its high-speed fibre optic network if enough people express an interest in the service.

2Mb is not a bad connection speed though is it? I suspect they’re a people not that much further outside of Bristol with 512Kb, what can you not do with 2MB that you can with 4MB or 8MB?

Quite a bit to be honest … Normal video (iPlayer works – just – on 2Mb) HD video? Fast downloads? Agree there are plenty on worse connections but you don’t expect 2Mb in the 7th biggest city in England, do you?

2mbits is pathetic. personally, I can only just about get 1.75 with all the best kit finely tuned.
If you’re like me and have several kids at home, the connection will be swamped with them streaming just youtube stuff or last.fm.
When I moved from a sleep little somerset town which had cable and near 8mbit adsl, I expected something similar or better here. Fat chance. My mother gets 3 times as much bandwidth as I do

True, when I moved the fourth wife in I checked the internet connection speed in the house as otherwise I wouldn’t have purchased. A decent internet connection and a wall facing astra’s satellite and you have a winner in my book.

You choose your home depending on the speed of the internet connection? :/

Hi , been in Bradley Stoke – Kempereleye way for a year , get about 2 meg off peak but drops to dial-up speeds at peak times. There are CATV inspection covers in the pathement, but I have no idea if there are cables under them? Anyone on virgin cable in Kemperley way?
