Bradley Stoke broadband campaign: One down, 26 roads to go

A Bradley Stoke resident will finally be able to enjoy the benefits of fast broadband thanks to the Examiner and the Bristol Evening Post.

John Bradbury, a local journalist, had been told by Virgin Media’s customer services department that he could not get the firm’s high-speed internet service.

But after featuring in the Evening Post as part of our campaign to convince the company to cable the town he found out that he was able to get the service.

After the article appeared in the paper a resident in a house opposite told Mr Bradbury they were a Virgin customer.

It then emerged three others on the opposite side of Ellan Hay Road also were hooked up to Virgin Media despite the firm telling John he could not be connected.

When an engineer visited this week to correct a fault at a neighbouring property they visited Mr Bradbury and confirmed it was possible for him to be connected.

“I now intend to get Virgin Media to install their broadband service at our property,” added Mr Bradbury.

“Others in Bradley Stoke who may previoiusly have been told they could not obtain a high speed broadband service from Virgin Media may find they too may be able to obtain the service.

“As long as the records for cabling service have been kept up to date with what is actually available on the ground in individual streets and that data is correlated with telephone accounts.”

Meanwhile, Virgin Media has released a list of the streets which are currently uncabled.

Some 26 streets in the town are currently not hooked up to the cable firm’s high-speed network – hit the ‘more’ button if you’re on the homepage to see the full list.

If you have not yet joined our campaign you can still e-mail Virgin Media and call on them to complete the roll-out in Bradley Stoke.

Send your name and address to cablemystreet@virginmedia.co.uk

There was alot of confusion about what was going on in Ellan Hay – the short version is that they cabled half way down the road – to the bottom of the hill and that’s how it remained for sometime (10+ years I think!). Then after a few of us on the top of the hill moaned they finally got it all sorted so that the whole of Ellan Hay Road has cable – and blooming nice it is too – Ellan Hay couldn’t get much further from the BT exchange so has appalling BT ADSL speeds :(

Is that a complete list? I’m in Teasel Mead (off Hawkins Crescent) and I didn’t think we could get cable.

I’d love to know as well. I’m in Hawkins Crescent and would switch to Virgin’s fibre optic at the drop of a hat….

I’m pretty sure Coriander Drive is un-cabled. Even the postcode checker on the Virgin Media website says no.

the postcode checker says Crystal Way is not cabled either

  • 8 Steve // Jun 8, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Sages Mead (off Hawkins) isn’t cabled either. I know that the cable manhole cover is just around the corner by Meadowbrook school though..

The Culvert is not cabled either. Placed a request with Virgin a while back, have not heard anything yet

So, the list of uncabled streets has doubled! ;)

I’ve no idea how many streets there are in Bradley Stoke. Would it have been quicker for Virgin to have listed the ones they can cater for?

  • 16 Andy // Jul 21, 2009 at 2:24 pm

    Still dont see Kings Drive

  • 17 Bill Blog // Aug 6, 2009 at 9:31 pm

What about Lavender Way – a quiet backwater with around 200 family homes on it????

While we are at it – why were they given a contract to cable the area and then walk away from a job half done.

Surely the toothless planks at the council didn’t sign another half baked contract ……… then again they couldn’t run a village hall bar without losing money on the peanuts.

Perhaps Tesco would like to fund the job ????

    Kings Drive pleeaaassseee!

  • 19 Julie // Sep 2, 2009 at 8:52 pm

I live in Lavender Way I was with virgin.net for a few years until BT messed up my phone line and were unable to put me back on the route I was on which left my phone line on the end of a long line and I am unable to get even 1/2 meg down my phone line now – BT are not interested either.

  • 20 Graham // Sep 2, 2009 at 11:47 pm

how about palmers leaze? Doesnt come up on the postcode checker when i put mine in – admittedly I live in a flat there but ADSL speeds are appalling at present

  • 21 James // Sep 6, 2009 at 10:26 am

    Lavender Way

What is the formal agreement with Virgin.

Enough names will secure ability to ask for a “trenching” grant from local government?

I say this as it is my undertsanding that they just ran out of money in the first place due to the economic model taking too long to pay back as profit.

  • 22 j3 // Sep 16, 2009 at 10:47 am

    “Remaining Palmers Leaze (part served)”

What does it mean? I live in Palmers Leaze 1-11 Flat, is it covered?

    Thank you!

We tried to get cable broadband on Kingfisher Close recently. The postcode checker said we COULD get it. Then, when we proceeded to sign up, we were suddenly told it wasn’t possible…

So what’s going on with that?! :S
