Cycle lane could link Bradley Stoke up with The Mall and Parkway

cyclelane

A consultation has been launched into a proposed cycle lane which would cross Bradley Stoke.

The scheme, funded by the Cycle City government cash, would see a bike lane stretching from Cribbs Causeway, though the town and on to Parkway station.

The first part of the proposed path runs from The Mall, along Jupiter Road, through Brittania Industrial Estate and on to Bradley Road to The Tumps BMX track & Aztec West.

It would then link with Aztec West before going through Patchway Common and on to Bradley Stoke Way.

Here, it links up with The Willow Brook Centre before the second part of the scheme links up to Parkway station.

The route for this lane would be through Bailey’s Court to Winterbourne Road before heading to North Road and Mead Road and Parkway.

The new lanes would be created by widening existing pathways to “allow shared use”.

New signs would be put up, safe level crossing points installed with existing lighting along the route to be reviewed.

The consultation period for both schemes runs until 7 October 2009.

If its done right it could get alot more people cycling to The Mall, especially workers.

It will be great to make the subway underneath the A38 legal for cyclists. Its currently the safest way to get across the A38 but, strictly speaking, cyclists aren’t allowed to use it!

Shared paths are a joke. If you use them as a cyclists you get told off by pedestrians (who more 0ften than not are spread across the whole path).

I’ll just stay on the road, thanks.

Let’s hope this puts a final nail in the coffin of the ridiculous cycle lanes on Bradley Stoke Way – the ones where you have to veer across the road to the opposite side and ride into traffic about half-way between the roundabouts! I’ve never seen a worse bit of traffic management in my life.
All that space down there and the best they could come up with was to squeeze the cyclists onto the road with all the other vehicles doing 40mph!

Oh, and anon – share paths actually work very well in a lot of continental cities, but they do them properly there – they have a clear deliniation, often on a slightly lower level than the pedestrian areas or with a different surface, always next to the road but with lowered kerbs at junctions, priority cycle traffic lights at junctions, designed crossing points etc.
Here, we paint a white line down a path, paint some pedestrian/bike symbols every 400 yds and think that’ll do!
