The site read “By Crackers_Child Turkish Defacer” with a flag from that country posted below.

Foreign writing and some obscene language was also written on the site.

The incident was the first that the council’s webmaster company, Two Thirds, had ever encountered.

A spokesperson for the council said: “It was nice to see that many residents emailed and phoned in and that the Bradley Stoke Examiner flagged this up for us.”

Tory councillors petition for sixth form

February 10th, 2007 · No Comments

Local councillors have launched a campaign for a sixth form to be opened at Bradley Stoke Community School.

Literature was delivered to homes in the town during the week by the Conservative Party saying they want the facility open by 2010.

In it, Cllr Julian Barge says: “We we campaigned to build our school a major factor was that we wanted to develop a sense of community by ending the practice of local children having to go to over five different secondary schools.

“If we don’t achieve a new sixth form this will happen again.”

The Conservatives point out that “every other secondary school in South Gloucestershire has its own sixth form”.

The leaflet includes a petition for the facility.

Council budget faces £3.5m cuts

December 16th, 2006 · No Comments

The Evening Post reports South Gloucestershire Council’s budget will be cut by £3.5m in the next financial year.

Services facing reductions include meals-on-wheels services, care packages, reduced highway maintenance and reducing support for rural and bus services.

Childrens and young persons services face a cut of £500,000, although no teachers jobs will be at threat from the move.

The council could go as far as to close public toilets as they seek to spend less pennies.

The shortfall is no surprise, says the Post, when you realise South Gloucestershire receives only £207 per person in government support grants while Bristol gets £382.

You can see the full details here and see details of a budget meeting in Bradley Stoke in January here.

Money for nothing and your bins for free

December 5th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Fancy telling the council how to spend your hard-earned dosh? Then January brings all that you need to tell them what’s wrong with their budget.

South Gloucestershire Council’s three-year cash plan is up for discussion at a meeting in Bradley Stoke.

They say the meeting, and others like it, will “shape how much is spent on everything from street lighting and waste disposal”.

With tax and grants the council is set to spend some £150m excluding schools so tell ‘em what you’d like (and, no, a new Xbox is not a good answer) at the Community School on January 9 at 7pm.

Have fun!

BS32 healthcare centre plans dashed

November 30th, 2006 · 1 Comment

Bradley Stoke won’t get a new healthcare centre, says South Gloucestershire’s NHS trust.

The centre, which would have been built on land off Savages Wood Road, has been canned in favour of improving current facilities.

The NHS says it came to the conclusion after talking to healthcare professionals and residents.

Penny Harris, from the NHS, said: “When we consulted with people living in Bradley Stoke we found most felt that they received a good quality of care and support from their GPs and wanted extra services and support to be delivered locally.”

They did, however, reveal plans for an NHS dental practice in the new town centre.

Ms Harris continued: “Proposals for the new Bradley Stoke town centre offer a unique opportunity to create and open a new central dental practice.

“This is too good an opportunity to miss and we will be working closely with South Gloucestershire Council to take plans forward.”

Ex-councillor convicted of stealing from council

November 3rd, 2006 · No Comments

David Hart, a former councillor on Bradley Stoke Town Council, has been convicted of stealing two cheques to pay off his debts, reports the Evening Post.

Hart, 44, of Whitley Mead, Stoke Gifford, paid a cheque for more than £8,000 into his account.

He tried to pay a second cheque for £7,000 into his account, but it did not clear, according to Bristol Crown Court.

Hart was ordered to carry out 180-hours of community service.

The Examiner understands the town council did not suffer any financial loss from the episode.
